Transgender beaten to death over fake kidnapping rumours
Hyderabad: A transgender was beaten to death over rumours on the social media that the person was the member of a child-lifting gang. The member of the transgender community named, Chandraiah, was undergoing treatment in Osmania General Hospital.
According to police, two transgenders and the man have been seen in the locality only recently. They had come from Mahabubnagar to seek alms from locals during the holy month of Ramzan, police said. The incident took place at around 12.10 am near Naseeb Nagar.
According to police, around 11.35 p.m., a patrolling team was rushed to the spot, after receiving an alert from the control room that a group of transpersons were being attacked by the locals. “We immediately rushed to the spot to control the mob and rescue the victims. However, the enraged men started attacking the police with stones,” said a police officer, adding that it took them more than an hour to disperse the crowd. A police constable suffered minor injuries and a patrolling vehicle was damaged.
“A transgender who was beaten by a mob over rumours of a child-lifting gang on WhatsApp, succumbed to injuries yesterday, 15 people were arrested,” said Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar.
About 15 people were arrested by the south zone police after analysing the video footages of surveillance cameras in the areas. Murder and attempt to murder cases were filed against the accused.
An investigation is underway to find out more people involved in this case.The Commissioner while speaking to the media said that spreading of disinformation in the social media sphere should be discouraged, and added that if any such rumours come to the fore than the police authorities should be informed immediately.
