Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 850
Qualcomm in Computex 2018 unveiled its new Mobile Computer Platform – Snapdragon 850. The new SoC is focussed for the Always On, Always connected Windows PC category. This is the same lineup which was launched by Microsoft and Qualcomm last year. This new platform will focus on delivering long battery life and constant cellular connectivity.
The Snapdragon 850 is the second generation of 10nm chips, with snapdragon 835 being the first such SoC. 850 is being said to be performing 30% than earlier Snapdragon 835. Qualcomm says that it will provide 30% increase in graphics performance with the new Adreno 630 GPU.
Snapdragon 850 is made to deliver 20% faster Gigabit LTE speeds, which is up to 1.2 Gbps. It is expected to increase battery life by 20% i.e. up to 25 hours! This is all due to the new Qualcomm X20 LTE modem- Cat.18 LTE which also supports nearly all global operators for Gigabit LTE, by reducing LAA licensed requirement to 10 MHz only.
Snapdragon 850 will increase AI performance by 3X with Qualcomm AI Engine on board. The new SoC comes with Qualcomm Aqstic and aptX audio feature which provides high-fidelity built-in audio support.
The Snapdragon 850 in combination with Windows 10 april update, will support a 64-bit version of Microsoft edge browser. It also supports Microsoft Machine Learning SDK, which will help developers in AI feature building.
Snapdragon will soon be launching ultra-portable windows 10 laptop range.
