After a long gap, RGV and Nagarjuna are back with a serious cop drama called Officer. The film has hit the screens yesterday.
Shivaji Rao IPS(Nagarjuna) is appointed to lead the special investigation team to find out the truth in a fake encounter that happened in Mumbai.
Another police officer Narayan Pasari is involved in this encounter. Shivaji Rao starts his investigation and finds some interesting elements in the case. What happens then? Forms the story of the film.
Nagarjuna Akkineni is undoubtedly one of the best actors in the movie. He has portrayed a brilliant performance in the film and has brought the required emotion that his character demands. Nagarjuna is seen playing soft roles in all his movies in the recent past, but this movie has come as a change for him. Though it is not completely convincing, Ram Gopal Varma tried his best to present Nagarjuna differently.
The actor who played Narayana Pasari is a new face for Telugu audiences, and he failed to connect instantly. The director could have gone for a known face. Myra Sarin is good regarding glamour and did her part well in the movie. The rest of the actors in the movie have played their roles well and impressed everyone.
The first half of the film is somewhat okay. It offers some variety in terms of story. Though the subject, as typical of RGV films, deals with mafia & police, this time departmental investigation on a bad cop brings in some interest aspect initially. However, soon it evaporates with pointless story and direction in second half. Too much violence at times, weird sound design, and weird camera angles test patience.
While Narayana Pasari characterization is interesting in first half, director could not explain the rationale behind his extreme behaviour. Once pasari released scot free in departmental inquiry, he running a mafia gang doesn’t make any sense. Then onwards, the special investigative squad formed by him operates as a mafia gang and chase Nagarjuna’s police squad. Here the story turns very routine crime drama. The smart writing which used to be in Ram Gopal Varma films is a bigtime missing. There is ample scope to insert brilliant scenes as double agents, cross intelligence etc. are involved in story. But he failed to do so. Because of poor production values, the cinematic experience is missing especially with its 1 hour 55 minutes short duration. There are two songs, both are situationally good enough.Rahul penumatsa cinematography is weird with its crazy angles at times. Biswas’s sound design is good.
Officer is another disappointing film from Ram Gopal Varma. He couldn’t utilize the comeback opportunity provided by Nagarjuna. With an average first half and poor second half, the officer movie is a disappointing one.
